How to Find a Chat ID in a Telegram Bot

You need a chat identifier whenever the bot writes first: notifications, broadcasts, posting to a channel. Here is what it is and how to get it.

What a chat id is

A numeric identifier of the conversation the bot sends a message into. Not a name, not a link - a number.

The forms and how they look:

• A private chat. A positive number, identical to the user identifier.
• An ordinary group. A negative number.
• A supergroup or channel. A negative number with a long prefix. It looks unusual and is the normal format.

A practical detail: for a public channel you can use its @username instead of a number. For a private one, only the number works.

How to get it

The method that always works:

1. Start a chat with the bot or add it to the target chat.
2. Post any message there. For a channel, publish a post, with the bot as an administrator.
3. Look at the bot updates - the chat identifier arrives with the message.

In code the identifier is present in every incoming event, so a handler can simply read and store it. For broadcasts that is the only correct approach: save the identifier on first contact rather than collecting it manually later.

Third-party helper bots that display the identifier exist and get used for one-off lookups. Remember that you are forwarding a message to somebody else’s bot, which matters for work chats.

The difference from user id

In a private chat they coincide, which is exactly why the confusion only shows up in a group.

The user identifier belongs to a person and is permanent. It tells you who pressed the button, who sent the message, whose orders these are.

The chat identifier belongs to the conversation. It is where you send a message.

A group is one chat with many users. The classic bug: replying to a user by chat identifier, so a private answer lands in the group for everyone to see.

The rule: check permissions by user identifier, send by chat identifier.

Groups and channels

A bot in a group does not see every message. Privacy mode is on by default: it receives only messages addressed to it and commands. If it must read everything, that mode is disabled deliberately in BotFather - see the token and settings.

A bot posts to a channel only as an administrator. Without admin rights the send fails.

A group identifier changes on conversion to a supergroup. This is the nastiest trap: the bot posted to a group for years, the group grew into a supergroup, the identifier changed, and sending stopped working. If a bot suddenly went quiet in a chat, check this first.

Practical conclusions

• Save the identifier on first contact into your database. Collecting it later by hand is wasted work.
• Do not hard-code identifiers. They change, and editing code for that is a poor arrangement.
• Handle send errors. The user may have blocked the bot, or the bot may have been removed from the group. An unhandled error in a broadcast stops the whole broadcast.
• Check permissions by user, not by the fact that a message came from the right chat.
