Proxy Rotation: When It Helps and When It Hurts
How rotation differs from a static address, why accounts need stability while scraping needs rotation, and how to configure address changes without creating new problems.

The choice between rotation and a static address matters more than the choice of proxy type, and it is the one people get wrong more often.
Rotation versus static
A static address is assigned to you. Every request leaves from the same one.
Rotation means the address changes: per request, on a timer, or on your signal.
A sticky session is the middle mode: the address is held for several minutes, then changes. A compromise that covers multi-step flows.
The deciding question: are you presenting an identity or collecting volume?
Accounts need static addresses
The logic is simple: ordinary people log in from one place. Home, work, a mobile network - a limited, stable set.
An account arriving from a new country every day looks anomalous. Not because it is forbidden but because ordinary users do not behave that way, and ordinary users are exactly what fraud detection is calibrated against.
Practical rules for accounts:
- One account, one address, permanently.
- Changing address is an event. If you must, do it rarely and within one region.
- Mobile addresses are the exception. Change is normal there because it is normal for real subscribers - see mobile proxies.
- Do not share an address between accounts that must not be linked.
The most common and most expensive mistake: buying a rotating residential pool for accounts because it is cheaper than dedicated addresses. Accounts on such a pool survive poorly, and the saving turns into lost accounts.
Scraping needs rotation
Here it is the opposite: identity does not matter, volume does.
The constraint you meet is the number of requests per address per unit of time. Rotation spreads requests across many addresses, and the limit stops being the bottleneck.
Practical rules for scraping:
- Set change frequency by result. Find the load per address at which errors and captchas begin, and stay below it.
- Sticky sessions for multi-step flows. If you need several pages in sequence, they must come from one address: changing mid-session looks more suspicious than a high request count.
- Not too often. Changing address on every request is itself anomalous: ordinary users do not do that.
- Account for traffic. Residential pools bill by traffic, and at volume the bill grows fast - see residential versus datacentre.
Configuring it
What belongs in the logic regardless of mode:
Retry on a different address. If a request failed, retrying from the same address is usually pointless.
Removing bad addresses. An address consistently returning errors should leave the pool rather than stay in use.
Concurrency limits. A hundred simultaneous requests through five addresses is twenty concurrent requests per address, and the outcome is predictable.
Pauses. Even with rotation, an excessive pace is visible through other signals.
Logs recording the address. Without them you cannot tell which address is failing.
Mistakes that cost money
- Rotation for accounts. The most common and most expensive.
- Changing address mid-session. Breaks flows that require continuity.
- Rotation with no culling. Bad addresses stay in the pool and poison the statistics.
- Changing too often. An anomaly in itself.
- Rotation instead of fixing the cause. If captchas appear because of the browser fingerprint, rotating addresses changes nothing - see captcha solving.

FAQ
Do accounts need proxy rotation?
No, the opposite. An account needs a stable address: ordinary people log in from one place, and arriving from a new country every day looks more suspicious than a constant address. Rotation is for scraping, where volume matters and identity does not.
How often should the address change when scraping?
By result rather than by schedule. Find the request rate per address at which errors and captchas start appearing, and stay below it. Changing too often is also harmful: it looks like automation in itself.
What is a sticky session?
A mode where an address is held for you for several minutes and then changes. A compromise between static and rotating: long enough to complete a multi-step flow from one address without needing a permanently dedicated one.
