Residential Versus Datacentre Proxies: The Difference
How a platform tells a server address from a home one, where datacentre proxies are perfectly fine, where residential ones are mandatory, and how not to overpay.

The difference between these types is the origin of the address, and it determines both the price and whether your request gets through at all.
How platforms tell them apart
No magic: every address block is registered to an organisation, and that information is public. Hosting provider ranges are known and labelled in ready-made databases.
Two things follow:
- Identifying a server address takes no effort. The site checks the address against a database, which is one line of code.
- Provenance cannot be hidden. The address either belongs to a hosting provider or it does not.
Platforms additionally look at indirect signals: suspiciously even behaviour, the absence of the latency variance typical of home networks, and the activity history of the address.
The practical conclusion: if a platform has decided to filter datacentre addresses, no configuration helps. You can tell from the result - the request fails regardless of anything else.
Where datacentre addresses are fine
More often than people assume:
- Scraping open data with no anti-collection protection.
- Working with APIs that never check the address.
- Internal tasks: monitoring, availability checks, tests.
- Checking results by region where only geolocation matters.
- Any task that does not involve platforms with fraud detection.
The advantages are substantial: cheap, fast and stable. Higher throughput than residential, lower latency, a fixed address.
The sensible approach: start with datacentre and move to residential only when requests stop getting through. The reverse order means paying for something you never needed.
Where residential is mandatory
- Accounts on platforms with fraud detection. Registration from a server address often fails outright.
- Scraping sites with anti-collection protection.
- Platforms where the address is part of an account’s reputation.
- Tasks needing a specific country at home-provider level.
The price: more expensive, slower, less stable. A residential address is somebody’s home connection and can become unavailable at any moment.
On billing specifically: residential is usually sold per traffic rather than per channel. For scraping that is critical: volume grows fast and the bill can exceed the value of the whole task. Estimate traffic in advance.
How not to overpay
Four techniques:
- Test the hypothesis cheaply. Take a datacentre address and see whether the request goes through. If it does, residential is unnecessary.
- Split the work. Some of it can go through cheap addresses, with expensive ones reserved for what genuinely needs them.
- Save traffic. Do not load images and media when scraping if you need text. That cuts the bill by a large factor.
- Do not buy mobile where residential suffices - see mobile proxies.
Another mistake that costs money: buying rotating residential addresses for accounts. Accounts need a stable address; rotation is for scraping. Covered in rotation.
What to check on a purchased address: checking proxies. The overview is in the proxy guide.
FAQ
How does a site know an address is a server address?
By range ownership. Every address block is registered to an organisation, and the fact that a range belongs to a hosting provider is public. Ready-made databases of that labelling exist, and any site can use them without doing research.
Are residential proxies always necessary?
No. Datacentre addresses are fine wherever provenance is not checked: internal tasks, scraping open data, working with APIs. Residential is needed where server addresses are filtered at the door, which is obvious from the result: the request fails regardless of other settings.
How much more do residential proxies cost?
Usually several times more, with different billing: per traffic rather than per channel. That matters for scraping, where volume is high: a residential traffic bill can exceed the value of the whole task, at which point a different collection approach is cheaper.
